negotiators have been on the scene since last week. we know the fbi took over the investigation last week, and we know that they've been trying to figure out kind of the layout of dykes' property. now, the aerial surveillance, when an fbi team comes in like this, they obviously have different methods that they use to get a clearer picture of what exactly is going on. we were able to confirm with a federal law enforcement official that the small aerial aircraft that we've been seeing kind of circling the property in the morning, that that was a surveillance aircraft. so that's what we've been seeing the last few days, and again police have been very tight-lipped and haven't said exactly what they have been finding or what the location -- or what the layout of dykes' property has been. >> gabe gutierrez, thank you so much. sorry -- you need to stay there, sorry, gabe. i wanted to ask you one more question concerning the bus driver. charles poland, who was laid to rest. he's being hailed as something of a hero because he was approached by the individual suspect and shot defending the other c

first name, ethan, celebrated his sixth birthday today. when the fbi stormed the bunker where he was held by his captive, the suspect opened fire. the suspect jimmy lee dykes was killed in that fire fight. dykes was accused of killing ethan's bus driver before kidnapping the boy and it appears he was prepared for a raid. investigators found a bomb in the bunker and one in the pipe dykes used to communicate with the authorities. marlie hall reports. >> reporter: investigators are still gathering and processing evidence from the underground bunker where suspect jimmy dykes held ethan captive. the fbi's hostage rescue team stormed into the bunker monday, set off flash grenades, and then shot and killed dykes. the fbi moved in after watching dykes through a camera that was inserted into the bunker during a standoff. cbs news senior correspondent john miller is a former assistant fbi director. >> cameras can be introduced through fiberoptic lenses which can be drilled into a pinhole in the wall. >> reporter: miller says the fbi will not reveal their spy tactics because they want to keep t

happened late today when fbi agents stormed the underground bunker to rescue the a-year-old boy being held for the past seven days by an armed survivalist. investigators say they were forced to act out of serious concern where the suspect's mental state. they say they thought the child was in imminent danger as they put it. the accused kidnapper is now dead and a brave little 5-year-old boy is physically safe. we are still waiting to learn lots of details and we may during this hour but according to investigators jimmy dykes, this man on tuesday grabbed the boy off a bus full of children after killing the bus driver, retreated with the child to the bunker near his home. dykes according to police then held the child in the room no bigger than a jail cell 6 feet by 8 feet. by many accounts the suspect was a violent and paranoid man. the town's mayor says the boy was very scared and had been crying for his mother. then today negotiations started to go down hill. and this afternoon the fbi said law enforcement decided to end it all. >> at approximately 3:12 this afternoon, fbi agents safe

currently. california department of justice is still the same that you see. the fbi is the same as that. what we agreed in the last meeting is that in san francisco we would continue to report race and we are required to report according to the code but we also talked about beginning to use the 19 ethnicities that we have available to us in the sheriff's system. the sheriff had a system that provided 19 ethnicities. we plan to go to that system eventually. we're currently not on it. we do an arrest card and give it to the sheriff and the sheriff enters it for us so essentially we are using their system. they produce the reports i'm going to show you. we worked closely with the sheriff to make this happen and we have the dual reporting report the codes and the ethnicities. as of october last we're we did it and we had to come back together because we were getting ones that said "not entered" and we took care of that so we are now getting pretty good statistics and that's what i am going to show you. so this is as i mentioned the bookings by race -- i should point out these are adult book
